Verlie Collins Obituary

Verlie Tickel Collins, age 92 of Fort Gay, WV went to be with the Lord on April 24th, 2018. Verlie was born on March 2, 1926, to the late John Morgan and Rebecca Ellen Evans of Oppy, Kentucky. She was also preceded in death by her husband James Collins, of Fort Gay, WV.

Verlie was an active member of the Frebis Avenue Church of God in Columbus, OH for forty-five years; however, for the past twenty-five years, called Silver Creek Church in Crum, WV her home.

Verlie was retired from the Federal Glass Company in Columbus, OH, and was a proud member of the North American Indian Association (Cherokee tribe).

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a husband, Robert Tickel; five brothers, Moses, Aaron, Wilson, Elva and Jack; three sisters, Polly, Virgie and Minnie; one son, Ted Collins of Fort Gay, WV and two granddaughters, Marsha Alldaffer and Rhonda Bowen.

Verlie is survived by two daughters, Drema Collins of Fort Gay, WV and Edna (James) Rife of Warren, MI; two sons, Robert (Mary) Tickel of Greenville, SC and Bub (Sharon) Bowen of Groveport, OH; one daughter-in-law, Sue Collins of Fort Gay, WV; three sisters, Corrine Smith of Columbus, OH, Johnny Barnes of Lowell, AR and Carol Lewallen of Springdale, AR.

In her later years she was called “Granny” by everyone; however, she was particularly loved and cherished by her six grandchildren, Dr. James Derek Collins, Rebecca (Joe) LeMaster, Rob (Heather) Tickel, Rae Ann (Brent) Smith and Alehia Bowen, nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, all of the past and present youth of the H.O.P.E. Youth Group of Silver Creek Church, and a beloved caretaker, Alex Harper.

Verlie modeled her two favorite Bible verses, James 1:19 “…be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger” along with Psalm 37:3 “Trust in the Lord and do good…”

Throughout her life she maintained a sweet and simple demeanor that won the trust and hearts of all that knew her. Her signature gift of joy, shown through her constant smiling, laughter and joking around will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers it was Verlie’s wish that donations be made to H.O.P.E. Youth Group, where she was an active volunteer of their community service projects for many years. Donations may be sent to: H.O.P.E. Youth Group (Drema Collins), P.O. Box 412, Fort Gay, WV, 25514.

Funeral service will be conducted on April 27th, 2018 at 11 AM at Silver Creek Church in Crum, WV by Pastor Del Crum with her nephew, Rev. John Evans Sr., delivering the message. Burial will be at Mountain View Memory Gardens in Maher, WV. Visitation will be held on April 26th, 2018 at Young’s Funeral Chapel in Louisa, KY from 6-9 PM.
